Genetic conditions

Disability Care

Welcome to the World of Genetic Conditions. Our genes, passed down from generation to generation, are the building blocks of our unique traits and characteristics. They hold the instructions for making proteins that help us grow and develop. But sometimes, a change in the DNA sequence of our genes can cause a Genetic Condition, affecting the way our body functions. Life with a Genetic Condition can come with challenges, but there's no need to face them alone. With the right support and resources, people living with Genetic Conditions can lead happy and fulfilling lives.

A Genetic Condition occurs when the DNA sequence of our genes is altered or the proteins they encode are produced incorrectly. It can be inherited from our parents or caused by mutations during our lifetime. There are four primary types of Genetic Conditions:

  1. Single-Gene Disorders - caused by mutations in a single gene, such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia.

  2. Chromosomal Disorders - caused by changes in the number or structure of chromosomes, including Down Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, and Klinefelter syndrome.

  3. Complex Disorders - caused by mutations in two or more genes and including certain types of cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, and heart disease.

  4. Mitochondrial Disorders - caused by mutations in the DNA in the mitochondria, leading to cellular dysfunction.

Genetic Conditions can present in a variety of ways, from intellectual disabilities to metabolic dysfunction, and can impact daily life. They should not be confused with congenital conditions, which are conditions present at birth but not necessarily related to one's genetic make-up.

No matter what challenges come with your Genetic Condition, Personalised Care is here to help you or your loved one lead a life filled with joy and fulfillment.
