Motor neuron disease
Disability Care
Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a neurodegenerative condition that affects muscle strength, control, and coordination. It can strike adults of any age, but is most commonly diagnosed in older adults in their 60s or 70s.
The effects of MND are life-altering and can be challenging, but with proper treatment and support, patients can live longer and enjoy a better quality of life.
MND is a rapidly progressive disease that can present in different parts of the body, with varying symptoms and rates of progression. Some common signs and symptoms of MND include weakness in the hands, feet, or voice, fatigue, muscle aches and cramps, clumsiness and stumbling, difficulty swallowing or speaking, muscle wasting and weight loss, emotional instability, and cognitive changes.
The exact cause of MND is still unknown, although there are many theories and ongoing research. It is estimated that 5-10% of cases are genetically linked. As the disease progresses and patients' functional status declines, they may require increasing levels of care and support. Personalised Care is here to help connect you to the care and treatments you need.

What Does NDIS do for Motor Neurone Disease
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is covered under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and you may be eligible for funding to avail of Personalised Care's support services.
MND falls under the List A category of NDIS eligibility. If your loved one has been diagnosed with severe MND, they are very likely to be approved for funding (for example: assessed as Level 3, 4, or 5 on the Gross Motor Function Classification System – GMFCS). If a severe diagnosis of MND has not been established, you may fall under List B which requires further functional assessment prior to being approved for NDIS funding.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers a wide range of support for those with Motor Neurone Disease, enabling you or your loved one to live life to the fullest. From speech and occupational therapy to personal care and nutritional support, the NDIS covers essential services to enhance the quality of life for those with MND.
NDIS funding can even extend to hiring a Support Worker to provide assistance at home. And, if you're an NDIS participant, plan management and support coordination funding is often made available to you. The types and amounts of funding available are tailored to meet the specific needs and functional loss of each individual with MND.
For young children under seven, NDIS funding provides early interventions, takes a family-centered approach, and connects families with MND service providers. At Personalised Care, our team can help guide you or your loved one through the NDIS application process to receive the necessary funding for MND support services. Our participant-centric approach aligns with the NDIS' mission to empower individuals and families with the support they need to live a fulfilling life.
